Details of the “unofficial paper” presented by Bolton to the Turkish officials on the withdrawal from Syria
US National Security Advisor John Bolton, who met senior Turkish officials in Ankara recently, presented an “unofficial paper” containing items on the US withdrawal from Syria and Turkey’s relationship with it, the Middle East Eye website reported.
While the Turks were expecting Bolton to carry with him plans to withdraw US troops from Syria, he instead presented an “unofficial paper” explaining Washington’s position on controversial issues on the withdrawal and talking about several points, including asserting that the US withdrawal from Syria would be decisive and organized.
It also talks about renewing the commitment to fight the organization of the Islamic state throughout the presence of US forces in Syria, noting that President Donald Trump has already confirmed that his country will retain all the necessary means to prevent the return of the reorganization of the state again.
The paper proposes a negotiated solution that takes into account Turkey’s concern about Syria’s Kurds, whom Ankara accuses of being an extension of the PKK, but US officials gave no details on the withdrawal timetable or the post-withdrawal plan, a Turkish official said.
The paper also says Washington will pursue the withdrawal of Iranian-backed forces from Syria and push for a political solution in the country, which has been battered by years of fighting.
The paper also states that US forces will not withdraw from the Al Tanf base in southern Syria, which provides a safe haven for refugees and FSA forces, and shows that the release of state fighters from the United States by “foreign terrorists” Acceptable, and Washington pledges that it will give priority to taking appropriate action with them.
Turkish officials have discussed the lack of military action against the people’s protection forces with the presence of US troops, and renewed Ankara’s firm stance against any presence of the organization’s forces, which it describes as a terrorist on its border, the website said, quoting a source familiar with the talks.
John Bolton questioned the negotiations between Turkey and Russia over the two-party plan for the post-US withdrawal from Syria, but the Turks were determined to refuse to tell Americans about the secrets of their meetings with the Russians.
