Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, Deputy Head of Russian Military Intelligence, was leaving the building when an assailant surprised him, firing several shots from a silenced pistol inside the stairwell.

The bullets struck him in sensitive areas, but weren’t fatal, while the perpetrator withdrew with calculated speed, as if every step had been pre-planned.

Alekseyev was rushed to the hospital under heavy guard and immediately taken into surgery.

For hours, the Russian authorities remained silent, while security forces cordoned off the area and launched a massive search.

Later, it was announced that the general had survived and that his condition had stabilized, but the incident had already transcended its medical dimension and become national security matter.

The initial investigations focused on the details of the operation: the weapon used, the accuracy of the attack, the choice of location, and the timing.

All these elements led investigators to rule out the possibility of a lone actor or a personal motive.

It seemed clear that the attack bore the hallmarks of a professional intelligence operation, and that the objective was not merely to injure a man, but to send a message.

Less than two days later, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) announced that it had identified the main suspect: Lyubomir Korba, a Russian citizen born in Ukraine, with a history of foreign travel and suspicious connections, according to the official account.

The investigation revealed that Korba had left Russia shortly after the attack, using an indirect route to avoid detection, before arriving in the United Arab Emirates.

At this point, the case entered a more sensitive phase, as instead of relying solely on arrest warrants or indictments, Moscow activated direct security cooperation channels with Abu Dhabi.

According to information later revealed, Emirati security services were able to locate and arrest the suspect discreetly, without any public fanfare, in an operation described as precise and swift.

The arrest wasn’t merely a security measure; it became a significant political event.

After the completion of legal procedures, Korba was handed over to Russian authorities, a move that reflected a high level of trust and coordination between Russia and the UAE.

Following the official announcement of his extradition, Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly thanked UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, praising the UAE’s decisive role in arresting the suspect and returning him to Russia.

In security circles, such praise is rarely given publicly, which observers considered a clear political message confirming the depth of security cooperation between Moscow and Abu Dhabi and giving the case an international dimension that transcends the boundaries of a criminal investigation.

Within Russia, the investigation identified the main perpetrator, the security authorities announced the arrest of another individual suspected of providing logistical support, while also revealing a third suspect who, they said, had fled to Ukraine before her arrest.

This information reinforced the hypothesis of a support network, rather than a lone individual who carried out the attack and then disappeared.

As for the accusations, Moscow went further, directly blaming the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) for planning the assassination attempt.

According to the Russian narrative, the goal wasn’t only to eliminate a high-ranking military figure but also to destabilize the country internally and send a message of pressure at a highly sensitive time, coinciding with diplomatic efforts and attempts to reopen negotiations regarding the ongoing war.

Kyiv quickly denied these accusations, considering them part of a media and political war, and asserting that Moscow hadn’t presented any independently verifiable evidence.

This discrepancy in the narratives brought to the forefront the nature of the ongoing conflict, where intelligence warfare is no less fierce than direct military confrontations.

The assassination attempt against Alexeyev, in the view of many, exposed the fragility of the line separating the front lines from the interior of the country.

If an intelligence official of this rank was targeted inside a residential building, it raises profound questions about the nature of the next phase, the limits of possible escalation, and the role of assassinations and assassination attempts as a tool in the ongoing conflict.
