The Turkish government has appointed Nuh Yilmaz, Deputy Foreign Minister, as Ankara’s ambassador to Syria, in a significant diplomatic move that is part of a series of new appointments to the Turkish diplomatic corps.

Turkish diplomatic sources told the Turkish Anadolu Agency on Friday that Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan officially informed Yilmaz of his appointment as Türkiye’s ambassador to Damascus, as part of a reshuffle that included several embassies and permanent representations around the world.

Yilmaz is one of the most prominent figures with a security and political background in Ankara.

He previously held a senior position at the Turkish National Intelligence Agency (MIT) before moving to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This gives him a pivotal role in Turkish-Syrian relations, which have witnessed rapid rapprochement and public coordination between the two sides over the past two years.
