Demonstrations take the streets of the United States denouncing military support for Israel and calling for an arms embargo on Tel Aviv
Protesters demonstrated in several US cities on Tuesday to denounce US military support for Israel as the risk of a full-scale conflict in the Middle East grows, and anti-war activists called for an arms embargo against the US ally.
Dozens of protesters gathered in New York City’s Herald Square on Tuesday evening, holding signs that read “Hands off Lebanon now” and “No US-Israel war on Lebanon”.
Protesters chanted “Hands off the Middle East,” “Free Palestine,” and “Biden, Harris, Trump, Bibi; no one is welcome in our city,” referring to US President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former US President Donald Trump, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
A smaller demonstration was held near the White House in Washington on a rainy Tuesday evening.
Israel says its actions are acts of self-defense against armed groups such as the Palestinian Hamas Movement, and the Lebanese Hezbollah.
The United States maintained its support for its ally Israel during this war despite domestic and international criticism.
In May, Biden said US support for Israel was unwavering, while also calling for an immediate ceasefire.
“What is happening in Gaza isn’t genocide… We reject that,” Biden said at a Jewish American Heritage Month event at the White House.
