Days after announcing his assassination… The Israeli army announced the discovery of the body of Hamas leader in Gaza Mohammed Sinwar

The Israeli military said Sunday it had found the body of Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar in Gaza and identified him, days after Israel announced it had assassinated him in an air strike in the enclave.

The Israeli army said in a statement, “After completing the autopsy, it was confirmed that the body of the terrorist Mohammed Sinwar was found in the underground tunnel beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip”.

The Israeli army indicated that the body was found in a precise operation carried out with the Shin Bet security service, noting that Sinwar was liquidated in an airstrike on May 13, along with others, including Mohammed Shabana, commander of the Rafah Brigade of the al Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s military wing.

The Israeli army statement added, “During the searches of the underground track, items belonging to Sinwar and Shabana were found, in addition to other intelligence material that was transferred for further investigation”.

Sinwar’s body was found under the hospital, under the emergency room, of the al Shifa hospital.

Meanwhile, through DNA and other tests, the body was indeed that of Mohammed Sinwar.

On May 28, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the military had assassinated Sinwar, the younger brother of former Hamas political bureau chief Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces during the war in Gaza.

Netanyahu said at the time in a speech before the Knesset, “We drove the terrorists out of our land… We forcefully entered the Gaza Strip and eliminated tens of thousands of terrorists… We eliminated… Mohammed Sinwar”.

Yahya Sinwar, whom Israel accuses of masterminding the October 7, 2023, attack, was assassinated in October 2024.

Experts believe that Mohammed Sinwar assumed command of the al Qassam Brigades after the assassination of its commander, Mohammed Deif, during the war.

Following the assassination of many of Hamas leaders and field commanders since the outbreak of the war, its believed that Mohammed Sinwar has become the focal point of decisions regarding indirect negotiations with Israel, the hostage issue, and the leadership of the al Qassam Brigades.
