Syria stressed that the restoration of normal relations with Türkiye depends on the return of the situation to what it was before 2011, as a basis for the security and stability of the two countries.

According to the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement, that the interest of countries is based on sound relations between them and not on collision or hostility.

The statement added, “In light of the successive statements and positions on relations between Syria and Türkiye, the Syrian Arabic Republic would like to recall that it has always distinguished between peoples and the policies of governments that have harmed Syria, as proven by facts and events”.

The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that Syria believes that healthy relations between countries are the basis of its common interest, and therefore was keen to deal positively with initiatives aimed at improving relations, including initiatives to correct the Syrian-Turkish relationship.

Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that these initiatives aren’t for media purposes, but rather aim to build relations based on clear facts and principles that respect sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, and confront everything that threatens the security of the two countries.

The statement also stressed that any initiative to improve relations must be based on clear foundations, including the withdrawal of illegally present forces from Syrian territory, and the fight against terrorist groups that threaten the security of both Syria and Türkiye.

Finally, the statement concluded by “thanking and appreciating the brotherly and friendly countries that are making sincere efforts to correct the relationship between Syria and Türkiye,” stressing that the restoration of normal relations depends on the return of the situation to what it was before 2011, to achieve security, safety and stability for the two countries.

It’s worth mentioning that earlier, after inviting Assad to meet, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan authorized the Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, to meet with the Syrian President.
