The Daily Mail newspaper reported that Asma al Assad, the wife of former Syrian President Bashar al Assad, cannot enter the country despite holding British citizenship, due to her being subject to travel sanctions.

The British newspaper quoted sources in the British Prime Minister’s Office on Sunday as saying that Asma al Assad won’t be able to enter British territory because her passport expires in 2020.

Asma, whose passport has expired, is also subject to sanctions such as travel restrictions and asset freezes.

Sources in the British Prime Minister’s Office explained to the newspaper that it wasn’t possible for Assad’s wife to enter Britain due to the sanctions imposed on her.

Earlier, British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, who has the power to revoke citizenship, announced that Asma al Assad wouldn’t be allowed to enter the country.
