Controversial statement by the Greek Defense Minister… Türkiye poses an existential threat!
The Greek Defense Minister, Nikos Dendias made strong statements directed against Türkiye, as he spoke to Greek parliamentarians during the session that saw the passage of the bill, which will significantly increase the level of armament.
Dendias spoke of a long-term strategic threat stemming from Türkiye’s attitude toward Greece.
“The presence of a neighboring state objecting to international conventions not only on sovereign rights but also on sovereign status and minority identification is an explicit existential threat, and the legal and geographical borders of our state are also under threat,” Dendias said.
“Although we certainly welcome the calm and better climate that has recently prevailed with neighboring Türkiye, we must be prepared for that,” Dendias warned.
These statements come days after the meeting between the Greek Prime Minister and the Turkish President, during his official visit to Türkiye, where he met with the Turkish President to discuss Turkish-Greek relations.
During the meeting, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitotakis that there were no unsolvable problems between their countries.
Türkiye and Greece have long been at odds over issues including maritime boundaries, energy resources in the eastern Mediterranean, flights over the Aegean Sea, and the division of Cyprus.
