Chile announced on Tuesday that it will exclude Israeli companies from the largest aviation exhibition in Latin America, organized by Santiago next April.

A statement by the Chilean Ministry of Defense said, “By decision of the Chilean government, the 2024 edition of the International Air and Space Exhibition (FIDAE), scheduled to be held from April 9 to 14, won’t be attended by Israeli companies”.

The Chilean Ministry of Defense didn’t provide the reasons for the decision in its statement, but the government of leftist President Gabriel Boric criticized what it described as Israel’s “disproportionate” response to the October 7 attack launched by Hamas in southern Israel, which resulted in the killing of more than 1,160 people, the majority of whom were civilians.

Israel vowed to eliminate Hamas after the attack, and began a devastating bombardment on the Gaza Strip, followed by ground operations that caused the death of 30,631 people, the majority of whom were civilians.

Chile, which has the largest number of Palestinians outside the Arab world, recalled its ambassador to Israel in late October to protest “unacceptable Israeli violations of international humanitarian law” in Gaza.

In January, Mexico and Chile joined calls for the International Criminal Court to investigate possible war crimes in the war between Israel and Hamas.

Israel’s ambassador to Chile, Gil Artizili, told AFP on Tuesday that the government hadn’t contacted him to inform him of the news regarding the International Air and Space Exhibition.

He added, “We cannot say that we are surprised given the government’s doctrine toward Israel”.
