Can Europe fight Russia without NATO?
Europe is witnessing repeated statements about the possibility of sending military forces to confront Russia, amid questions about the ability of European countries to wage a conventional war without NATO support.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his strong position, noting that the joint French-UK force includes more than 2.5 million troops, 25% more than Russia’s, strengthening European defense capabilities.
Coinciding with these statements, the European Union approved an €800 billion rearmament program on the continent, aiming to bolster military capabilities by removing financial and logistical constraints.
Experts point out that this military escalation isn’t new, but rather builds on a long history of political tensions with Russia.
Amid this climate, intelligence reports indicate that European military equipment stockpiles are declining, with older tanks being transferred and refurbished before being sent to Ukraine, reflecting ongoing military preparations.
In addition, European armies are renewing their combat fleets and repairing aging equipment in anticipation of potential operations.
In comparison of military capabilities between Europe and Russia, the numbers indicate the situation.
The European Union has 1.3 million active personnel, 2.8 million reserve personnel, 2,500 warplanes, 5,000 tanks, and 200 major ships, while Russia has an army of 1.5 million soldiers, a reserve of an estimated 2 million, and an arsenal of 14,777 tanks, more than 4,000 warplanes, more than 1,500 helicopters, in addition to 350 warships and submarines.
According to experts, Russia possesses numerical and qualitative superiority in ground forces and the ability to mobilize rapidly, while European armies face significant challenges in coordinating their disparate military efforts.
Given these facts, the question remains: Is Europe prepared to engage in a direct confrontation with Russia without NATO support?
