The transitional government in Burkina Faso announced on Wednesday evening that it had thwarted a coup attempt the previous day, that is, almost a year after Captain Ibrahim Traoré came to power through a coup.

A statement read on national television said, “Intelligence and security services thwarted a confirmed coup attempt on September 26, 2023… Officers and other alleged perpetrators involved in this attempt to destabilize were arrested, while others are being sought”.

The government added in its statement that officers and other alleged perpetrators involved in this attempt to destabilize have been arrested, while others are being searched for.

The statement accused the organizers of the coup attempt of fueling the evil goals of attacking the institutions of the republic and pushing the country into chaos.

On Tuesday evening, thousands of people took to the streets of the capital, Ouagadougou, in support of Captain Traore and in defense of him, as rumors of a coup spread on social media.

The government affirmed in its statement that it wanted to shed light on this conspiracy, expressing regret that officers who swore to defend the nation engaged in a project of this kind aimed at obstructing the march of the people of Burkina Faso for their sovereignty and their complete liberation from the hordes of terrorism that are trying to enslave them.

This supposed coup attempt comes almost a year after Captain Traoré took power in a coup on September 30, 2022.

Traoré seized power in a coup, the second in eight months, in Burkina Faso, which has been suffering from bloody jihadist attacks in a large part of its territory for nearly ten years.
