Controversy over prostitution in Germany, as the Bundestag Speaker described her country as “the brothel house of Europe” calling to impose ban on prostitution in the country.

This came as the Bundestag Speaker, Julia Klöckner (of the Christian Democratic Union CDU), called for a comprehensive ban on the purchase of sexual services in Germany, similar to what is in place in Sweden and Norway, arguing that current laws don’t provide sufficient protection for women working in prostitution.

“I am absolutely convinced that we must finally ban prostitution and the buying of sex in our country,” Klöckner said during her speech at the “Heroines Award” ceremony organized by the Alice Schwarzer Foundation in Berlin.

“To say that prostitution is a profession like any other is not only ridiculous, but it’s an insult to women… There is no vocational training or even student training in this field”.

Klöckner sharply criticized the current situation, saying, “Germany has become the brothel of Europe,” noting that existing laws such as the Prostitution Act (2002) and the Act on the Protection of Sex Workers (2017) haven’t made a real difference in protecting women or reducing violence and exploitation.

Klöckner called for the implementation of what is known as the Scandinavian example, which criminalizes clients but not sex workers, and aims to reduce the demand for prostitution and help women start a new life away from this field.

It’s worth noting that this model is implemented in Sweden, Norway and France, where those who buy sexual services are punished, while the workers are offered social support and rehabilitation programs.

During the same ceremony, the Alice Schwarzer Foundation awarded its annual prize of 10,000 Euros to activists Sabine Constable and Kathrin Schauer-Kelben, in recognition of their efforts to help women escape prostitution and to combat human trafficking and the sexual exploitation of children.

Alice Schwarzer, a well-known auther and feminist activist, has been raising controversial positions for years, the latest of which was her opposition to the Self-Determination Act concerning the rights of transgender people, as well as her participation in signing what was called the “Peace Declaration” with politician Zohra Wagenknecht.
