The British Prime Minister Liz Truss apologized for mistakes in her platform that evaporated investor confidence and dipped her popularity in opinion polls before almost all were canceled on Monday, but said she would not step down.

“I want to take responsibility and say I’m sorry for the mistakes that were made,” Truss told the BBC.

“I wanted to act but to help people with their energy bills deal with the issue of higher taxes, but we exaggerated and moved too quickly”.

New Treasury Secretary Jeremy Hunt, who was appointed on Friday after sacked close ally Kwasi Quarting’s Truss, shrugged off the main remaining items on her tax-cutting agenda on Monday, including scaling back her vast energy subsidy scheme.

When asked if she had become prime minister in name only, Truss said she appointed Hunt because she knew she had to change course.

“It would have been completely irresponsible for me not to act in the national interest,” she said.

“It was right that we changed policy”.

Truss and Quarting attempted to turn British fiscal policy on its head by announcing unfunded £45 billion tax cuts last month to rescue the economy from recession.

But bond investors reacted violently and borrowing costs soared.

Lenders withdrew the mortgage offers and eventually the Bank of England had to step in to protect the pension funds.

When asked about the impact of her policies, Truss said she understands that it’s very difficult for families across the country and that she will do whatever she can to help them.

However, Hunt severely curtailed her two-year power pack.

It will now only run until April.

“The most vulnerable will be protected next winter,” Truss said.

“We’re looking at exactly how we can do that”.

It is reported that British Conservative MPs will try to oust Truss this week, but she has confirmed that she will lead the Conservative Party to the next election.

“I will stay here because I was elected to serve this country, and that is what I am determined to do” Truss said.
