Borrell: EU credibility at risk because of Israel
The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said on Monday that the bloc is at risk due to Israel’s disregard for orders issued by the International Court of Justice to stop military operations in Rafah.
According to him, “the provision of warnings, objections or exceptions on an illegal basis harms the values of the European Union, will damage its international standing, and weaken its position on other issues, including Ukraine”.
“Respect for international law isn’t an option, and ignoring the ICJ decision will weaken the rules-based global order that the EU supports and reinforces everywhere”.
“It’s time for the EU to shoulder its responsibilities in the face of what he described as a catastrophic situation of unprecedented magnitude, with its moral and political credibility at risk,” he added.
He stressed that “the killing of more than 30 displaced people in Rafah prompts us to demand the need to implement the decision of the International Court of Justice”.
