Michael Bloomberg has joined a large group of Democrats seeking their party’s nomination to challenge President Donald Trump, after announcing his candidacy for the US presidency on Sunday.
“I’ll run for president to defeat Donald Trump and rebuild America”, Bloomberg, 77, said on his website as he launched his $ 30 million propaganda campaign.
The announcement ended speculation about the intentions of Bloomberg, who has been preparing for weeks to enter the primary race and register his name with the Federal Election Commission.
“We cannot afford another four years of Trump’s irrational and immoral behavior”, Bloomberg said.
He noted that Trump “poses an existential threat to our country and our values. If he wins another term, we may never recover from the damage”.
With a fortune estimated at $ 50 billion, Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York, will shake the open competition of 17 Democratic candidates.
Former Vice President Joe Biden leads the race, leading leftists Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, while moderate Pete Puttigiegeg is fourth, according to a national poll.
