US President Joe Biden for the first time described his predecessor Donald Trump as a convicted criminal and a greater threat to the United States if he wins another term.

Trump became the first US president to be convicted of a crime last week when a New York jury convicted him of forging documents to cover up money to buy an actress who kept silent about their relationship before the 2016 election.

Speaking at a fundraiser in Greenwich, Connecticut, Biden said, “For the first time in American history, a convicted criminal former president is now seeking office”.

“But as worrying as its, the most damaging is Donald Trump’s all-out attack on the American justice system,” he said, adding that it was reckless and dangerous to say the justice system is dominated by fraud and manipulation because Trump and his allies don’t like the outcome.

Biden campaign officials said he has so far refrained from addressing Trump’s conviction to avoid creating the impression that he is politicizing the judicial process.

The president’s comments offer a glimpse of how he and his campaign can use Trump’s conviction to prove to voters that Trump is unfit for office, an issue that could help determine this year’s presidential race.

A spokeswoman for the Trump campaign said on Fox News that it was shameful for the Biden campaign to call Trump a convicted criminal.

Trump has disputed the verdict and legal proceedings since his conviction and plans to appeal.

He said on Sunday he would accept staying at home or in jail but it would be difficult for the public to accept that.
