Azerbaijan begins a military operation to control Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia calls on the Russians to intervene
The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan announced the start of a military operation to take control of the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave, the disputed region in the South Caucasus inhabited mainly by Armenian citizens.
The Azerbaijan defense ministry confirmed that this operation aims to restore constitutional order and cleanse the region of “terrorists”.
According to the statement issued by Baku, the main goal of the military operation is to force the withdrawal of Armenia’s forces from the region, in accordance with the ceasefire agreement reached after the last war in Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020.
On the other hand, Armenia called on the UN Security Council and Russia to take measures to end the military operation launched by Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The Kremlin expressed its concern about the sudden escalation in the region and called for the two sides to be brought back to the negotiating table.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken intends to contact the warring parties to end the military attack and reach a peaceful solution.
France also called for taking firm measures to respond to this unacceptable military attack by Azerbaijan, and is working with its partners to confront this escalation.
These events come in the context of escalating tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, and constitute a violation of international agreements and a threat to peace and stability in the region.
In latest, Azerbaijani ministry of defense confirms that Armenia-backed separatist government in Nagorno-Karabakh has surrendered.
Formations of the armed forces of Armenia and illegal Armenian armed formations located in lay down their arms, leave combat positions and military posts and completely disarm.
Units of the Armenian armed forces are leaving the territory of Azerbaijan, illegal Armenian armed formations are being disbanded.
At the same time, all weapons and heavy equipment are surrendered.
The implementation of the above processes is ensured in coordination with the Russian peacekeeping contingent.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia said that Yerevan supports the position of the Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh on a ceasefire.
