Axios: Israeli raids on Syria surprised Trump
Axios quoted a senior US official as saying that the recent Israeli airstrikes on Syria came as a surprise to US President Donald Trump and the White House at the time, especially since they came at a time when the US administration was seeking to rebuild the country and enhance its prospects for peace.
The source explained that Trump expressed his dismay at the scenes of bombing, noting that he doesn’t like seeing bombs dropped on a country that has already declared its reconstruction.
He added that there is a conviction within the US administration that “Israel doesn’t have the right to determine whether the Syrian government is able to exercise its sovereignty”.
The US official revealed growing suspicions within the Trump administration regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying, “His behavior has become extremely disturbing, and he sometimes acts like a child who is misbehaving”.
He also confirmed growing concern within the White House about Israeli regional policies, despite the ceasefire in Syria.
The source warned that current Israeli policies could destabilize Syria, which could harm both the Druze and Israel, stressing that “Netanyahu’s luck and Trump’s good intentions may not last long”.
