Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon announced his decision not to attend Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech on Wednesday in the US Congress.

Merkley said on X on Tuesday, “Following the horrific attack by Hamas, Netanyahu’s war strategy killed more than 12,000 women and children and caused widespread famine”.

“Netanyahu made his political presence the first to release the hostages… He shouldn’t be speaking before Congress”.

Many Democratic senators and representatives are expected to boycott Netanyahu’s speech to the US Congress.

Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren and independent Senator Bernie Sanders were among those who announced they wouldn’t attend Netanyahu’s speech.

Netanyahu addressed the US Congress in March, 2015 under former President Barack Obama, and about 60 Democrats didn’t attend to hear his speech.

More Democrats won’t attend the Israeli prime minister’s speech to the US Congress on Wednesday.
