An Israeli official will meet with the Syrian foreign minister this week as part of efforts to reach security understandings
The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation announced on Sunday that Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer will meet this week with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani, as part of efforts to reach security understandings between the two sides.
The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation quoted unnamed Israeli and Syrian sources as saying that Dermer will meet with the Syrian Foreign Minister this week as part of efforts to reach security understandings, however, the location of the meeting wasn’t specified.
On the other hand, the Syrian authorities haven’t yet commented on what was reported by the Israeli Broadcasting Authority.
The new Syrian administration, in power since late December 2024, posed no threat to Israel.
Despite this, the Israeli military repeatedly infiltrated Syrian territory, launching airstrikes that killed civilians and destroyed Syrian military sites, vehicles, weapons, and ammunition.
The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation reported that “Dremer had previously met several times with the Syrian minister with the aim of laying the groundwork for a security agreement”.
The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation pointed out that US envoy Tom Barrack is the one pushing for the anticipated meeting, having met with both sides over the past few months.
The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation said that Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani is close to Syrian transitional President Ahmed al Sharaa, who confirmed two weeks ago that his country was conducting advanced talks with Israel regarding a security agreement, including reaffirming the ceasefire agreement and arrangements that preserve Syria’s sovereignty, with the possibility of taking confidence-building steps that could pave the way for a future peace agreement.
On August 20, Asaad al Shaibani discussed with an Israeli delegation in Paris de-escalation and non-interference in Syrian affairs, and reached understandings that would support stability in the region.
