Algerian President: We’re wasting time with President Macron
The Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said that the political dialogue between his country and France is almost cut off, and that nothing is progressing except trade relations.
Tebboune said, “We’re wasting time with President Macron”.
In an interview with the French newspaper L’Opinion, Tebboune spoke about the existence of a harmful climate between Algeria and France, stressing the need to resume dialogue when Macron clearly expresses a desire to do so.
Tebboune criticized hostile statements issued every day by French officials, stressing that he wants to avoid an irreparable separation, and that the decline in relations between the two countries is the responsibility of the French Republic and, first and foremost, its president.
Tebboune expressed his approval of resuming dialogue between the two countries, noting that strong political statements must be issued in this direction, and that the French president, intellectuals, and supporters of the relationship must make their voices heard.
Relations between Algeria and France have deteriorated recently, following the arrest by Algerian authorities of the French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal since mid-November on charges of harming state security, and the arrest by French authorities of Algerian influencers, some of whom hold French citizenship, on charges of inciting violence.
