Al Monitor: The Pentagon presented a plan to the SDF to ally with Syrian government
According to al Monitor, the US Department of Defense (the Pentagon) presented to the Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) a plan for an alliance with the Syrian government.
Al Monitor, citing sources it described as informed, added on Monday that the plan aims to partner with the Syrian army forces to ISIS.
However, the sources didn’t reveal details of the Pentagon’s plan, but Al Monitor considered its goal to protect the Syria Democratic Forces, which are led by the Kurds in the fight against ISIS in the medium to long term.
The sources confirmed that the plan was presented to Türkiye, which is an important NATO member, to express its opinion.
The plan, according to the sources, comes as part of a renewed review of US policy in Syria, which is currently taking place at the US State Department.
The plan was presented during a meeting held last Thursday in the National Security Council at the White House, at the request of the Ministry of Defense to form a joint policy committee between foreign agencies and US intelligence.
For his part, the SDF leader, Mazloum Abdi, denounced the plan, which he described as “corrupt,” according to Al Monitor.
The sources declined to comment on whether the plan might be a prelude to Washington withdrawing its forces from northeastern Syria.
The United States currently has about 900 soldiers at its bases in northeastern Syria, with their justification of fighting ISIS.
According to Al Monitor, “There are increasing indications that the US withdrawal may be inevitable, if not imminent, amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran”.
The US bases in eastern Syria are subjected to repeated attacks, the main accused being factions affiliated with Iran based on the Syrian-Iraqi border.
Under the name “Islamic Resistance in Iraq,” these factions constantly announce their strikes, which are often carried out with one-directional marches and missiles, as the Pentagon announced earlier.
Repeated statements are issued by US officials, stating that the time has come to withdraw from northern Syria.
Syrian, Russian, and Iranian officials also stress the necessity of the withdrawal of US forces, given that their presence is illegal.
Last March, members of the US House of Representatives refused to vote on a draft resolution submitted by Republican Representative Matt Gaetz on the withdrawal of US forces from Syria.
