Turkey considered the bill adopted by a US Senate committee to impose sanctions on it “offensive to national sovereign decisions”.

This came in a statement issued on Thursday by the Turkish Foreign Ministry on a draft law adopted by the Foreign Relations Committee in the US Senate that stipulates the imposition of sanctions on Turkey because of the Spring of Peace operation and the S400 deal.

The statement added: “We know the motives behind the adoption of the bill by the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which provides for sanctions against our country under the pretext of the Spring of Peace operation and the S-400 system”.

The Statement continued: “The reason for this is the profound disappointment caused by the severe blow that we directed to the carefully prepared project in northern Syria for a long time”.

The Statement pointed out that the recent efforts in both houses of the US Congress come in the context of domestic political calculations, and are supported by anti-Turkey circles.

The Statement considered the aforementioned endeavors as “a new form of insulting our sovereign decisions related to national security”.

The Statement pointed out that these endeavors will only serve to harm Turkish-American relations.

The Statement explained that the Turkish Foreign Ministry sent the necessary response to a similar bill adopted by the US House of Representatives on October 29.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry statement continued: “The project to be put on the agenda of the Senate reveals the unwillingness to understand the explanations that we have provided”.

The statement called on the Senate to act wisely and take a constructive stance that prevents harm to common goals agreed upon at the highest levels between the two countries.

On Wednesday, the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee adopted a bill on imposing sanctions on Turkey for its purchase of the Russian S400 system and its military operations in Syria.

Eighteen members of the Foreign Relations Committee voted in favor of the bill, while 4 others rejected it.

The bill is expected to be submitted to the US Senate on Thursday for a vote.
