Jean-Luc Mélenchon, head of the Proud France party, one of the leaders of the leftist New Popular Front coalition, renewed his promise to recognize the state of Palestine.
In his speech after winning France’s general election on Sunday, Mélenchon indicated that the new prime minister would be from the Popular Front alliance.
The New Popular Front alliance took first place in the second round of Sunday’s snap general election, with 178 seats in parliament.
Mélenchon said the new government could issue decisions on many matters by decree at the national and international levels.
He renewed his promise to recognize the state of Palestine, noting that recognition of the state of Palestine would be one of the things they implement as soon as possible.
The Proud France party has led pro-Palestine demonstrations in the country since October 7, 2023, and included the Palestinian cause in the election campaign in the early general elections as well as in the European Parliament elections.
The party nominated Rima Hassan, who is of Palestinian origin, for the European Parliament elections, and she was elected to be the first Palestinian member of the European Parliament.
On Sunday, 49.5 million French voters went to the polls in the second round to determine the 501 deputies who will represent them in parliament for a five-year term, in addition to the 76 deputies elected in the first round.
In the second round, 1,094 candidates competed, and parties or alliances had to reach 289 deputies to claim an absolute majority in the 577-seat parliament.
On June 9, June, French President Emmanuel Macron dissolved parliament and called early elections, after the National Rally won more than 31% of the vote in the European Parliament elections and Macron’s centrist bloc was defeated.
