The United States is preparing a draft resolution for the UN Security Council calling for the lifting of sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa and his Interior Minister Anas Khattab, in addition to removing Hay’at Tahrir al Sham from the terrorist lists.

Washington has begun consultations with the five permanent members of the Security Council, amid differing positions.

While China is expressing caution about removing groups that include foreign fighters, France and Britain have expressed concern about the repercussions of lifting sanctions on factions formerly linked to al Qaeda.

It’s worth noting that lifting sanctions on Syria and lifting restrictions on the Syrian president comes within the framework of a US effort to reintegrate Syria into the international community, especially after al Sharaa’s recent visits to Saudi Arabia and France, and the anticipation of his participation in the UN General Assembly next September.
