A stormy meeting between Trump and top Democratic Party officials ends with the US president leaving the meeting, which he called a “complete waste of time”
The US government’s paralysis continues, after the meeting, which was described as stormy, ended Wednesday between US President Donald Trump and top Democratic Party officials abruptly after President Trump rose and ended the meeting.
“I just left a meeting with Chuck and Nancy, it’s a complete waste of time”, Trump tweeted.
Trump continue describing what happened during the meeting in his tweet, “I asked what would happen within 30 days, if I gave you quickly opportunities, would you agree to border security that includes building the wall or a concrete barrier?” Nancy said: No, I told her goodbye, I will not accept anything else!”
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Trump had left the meeting and Pelosi “at a time when talks to end the partial government closure are still in trouble”.
Schumer explained that Trump had got up and left the meeting after the House Speaker refused to approve the funding of the border wall.
“Trump, Speaker of the House of Representatives, asked at the White House meeting if she would approve the financing of the Wall.
When she said no, and said there was nothing to discuss”, Schumer described Trump’s actions as “very unfortunate”.
Earlier Wednesday, Trump predicted that an agreement would be reached between him and the Democrats on immigration policies and the border wall during the meeting.
US Vice President Mike Pence defended Trump’s position and criticized the Democrats for saying they were “not even willing to negotiate border security”.
“Trump will remain steadfast in his desire to secure funding to secure the border”, Pence said in a press statement after the US president left the meeting.
A few days ago, Trump threatened to resort to the declaration of a state of national emergency for the construction of the border wall with Mexico.
In the event of a state of national emergency, Trump would be able to take part of the Defense Department budget to cover the construction of the border wall with Mexico.
The partial closure came in its third week, after the White House and Congress failed to reach a budget deal, with Trump insisting on including the costs of building the wall.
Trump wants to add $ 5 billion to the draft budget to finance the construction of the wall, while Democrats oppose it.
In the absence of an agreement on the budget depends on the work of about a quarter of federal institutions, including the Ministries of Homeland Security, Transport, Agriculture, Foreign Affairs and Justice, in addition to public parks.
The United States and Mexico have a length of 3,000 kilometers, of which 1,100 km are fenced with barbed wire and barbed wire, but this section is tainted by a number of openings through smuggling and infiltration.
