On Sunday, Israeli TV channel broadcast the last episode of the documentary “The Combatant 566” about the Israeli spy in Syria Eli Cohen, without giving a clear answer.

How he was caught?

Moreover, the Mossad, in its comment on what was stated in the film, refused to accept responsibility for what happened, how Cohen was arrested, and why after 55 years of his execution in 1965 in the Syrian capital, the intelligence apparatus still adheres to the old narration that Cohen’s extensive broadcast from Damascus Within four years, it was he who led the Syrian intelligence services to track down, detect and arrest him.

Natan Solomon, the security trainer who trained Cohen in the Mossad, said that it was difficult for the device to recruit Cohen at first, because he was not prepared enough, and after they conducted him field training, and there was an appreciation of the position stating that the agency might dispense with its duties in some the times because he was under increasing pressure, and added that because of his refusal to deal with the “Mossad”, he was dismissed from his job at the request of the intelligence agency, to fall into the trap set by the “Mossad”.

The film held in the last episode, on Sunday, a recent meeting with Solomon, who never denied that a spy, whose identity has not been revealed, managed to enter the Mossad, and reached high levels in the apparatus, noting at the same time that in the same month In which Cohen was arrested in Syria, four other spies were arrested in Arab countries, foremost of which was Egypt, where television published an old interview with the Israeli spy in Egypt after his case was concluded in the English language, in which he confirmed that the Egyptian intelligence discovered his order due to a high-ranking spy who was working in Mossad, adding that the spy in Egypt number was 567, while Cohen’s number was 566.

Moreover, Solomon indicated in his speech that the head of the Syrian Intelligence at the time of Cohen’s arrest, Ahmed Suwaidani, published notes on the case, in which he contained coded messages that Cohen had sent via his secret transmitter to his operators in Tel Aviv.

Solomon said: “There was a complete correspondence between what was published by Suwaidani and what Cohen sent, adding that after the broadcast, the agency crossed out the message, so how did the Syrian intelligence chief obtain the original text?”

Solomon answers that an Israeli intelligence member, apparently a senior official, provided the Syrians with encrypted messages, confirming the existence of a spy working for the Arab regimes in the Israeli Mossad, as he put it.

Eli Cohen’s brother, who has been working since Eli’s execution in Damascus for what he called “revealing the truth,” told the Israeli TV channel that he found in the Israeli army’s archive a copy of a Syrian newspaper in which the Syrian intelligence chief published his memoirs about Cohen’s case, adding that an unknown Israeli side tore pages from the only newspaper number that was in the archive, according to which it confirms that your traitor in Tel Aviv who wanted to tell the truth, he said.

It is worth noting that the exchange of Israeli accusations around Cohen revolves around two hypotheses: Is Cohen indulging in his caution, as Mossad claims, or is the same apparatus negligent in securing the side of contacts with his client residing in Syria, according to his statements.

The head of the Mossad agency at the time, Meir Amit, explained in records received by his words after the arrest of Cohen, that the Mossad did not make mistakes in dealing with him through communication.

He was arrested because he underestimated his security procedures, and he felt overconfident in his movements and contacts, and here the error occurred, which he could not recover.

Cohen’s daughter, Sophie bin Dor, who was five years old, when her father was executed, criticized the Mossad because she was content with accusing Cohen of making a mistake, knowing that the Mossad and the entire country wanted to use it, and benefit from it until the end, if it had not been revealed.

Whatever it is, the Israeli documentary can be summed up and say that Cohen, who was considered a sacred cow in the eyes of the Israelis, as a leadership and a people, and a hero of the heroes who were killed because of their love for their state, is no longer the same, after floating on the surface of the main dispute between the Mossad and members of his family And the spy Eli Cohen became subject to a frenzy discussion within the Israeli security services, and it is striking that the last episode of the documentary, which was broadcast on Sunday, was titled: Are Cohen’s Actions Led to his Arrest and Execution, That is, the Space Available for “Freedom of Expression of Opinion” in Israel, however, it is limited when it comes to the security services and secret operations?
