The Russian Foreign Ministry announced a four-way summit between leaders of Russia, Germany, France and Turkey to discuss the situation in Syria.

In a statement published by the Foreign Ministry on Sunday (August 12th), Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will discuss the summit during his visit to Turkey on August 13-14, noting that it will be held in the “near future”.

The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, talked about a meeting of four international, in Istanbul, in September next, to discuss the Syrian issue and issues of the Middle East.

Erdogan told a news conference at the end of July that Istanbul would host France, Germany and Russia on September 7 to discuss regional issues, particularly the Syrian file.

The summit is separate from the tripartite summit, usually held between Russia, Turkey and Iran, the “guarantor” of the “easing tension” agreement in Syria.

France and Germany have not commented on their participation in the Quartet summit so far.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is on a visit to Turkey today, during which he will discuss the latest developments in Syria with his Turkish counterpart Mouloud Gawish Oglu.

The talks are currently underway between Russia, an ally of President Assad, and Turkey, in support of the opposition factions in the north, on the situation in the province of Idlib, amid talk about military action by the Syrian army against armed groups there.
