Iran on Wednesday called new US sanctions a clear sign of hostility after Washington blacklisted more than 30 people and a ship linked to the oil trade.

The sanctions announced by the United States on Monday included the head of the national oil company and others accused of mediating the sale and shipment of Iranian oil.

The sanctions follow President Donald Trump’s decision earlier this month to reinstate a policy of maximum pressure sanctions on Tehran, continuing the approach he took during his first term.

Making decisions on economic and trade interactions between countries is part of the legal right of nations to self-determination, and no party has the right to use political pretexts to prevent or disrupt their trade and economic relations,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said.

He added, “the US imposition of new sanctions on Iranian foreign trade is contrary to the principles of the UN Charter, especially the principle of respect for national sovereignty and the principle of self-determination of states, and therefore, it is considered a wrong, unjustified and illegitimate act that violates the human rights of the Iranian people”.

Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has called for dialogue with Iran, saying he wants it to be a great, successful country.

On Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi ruled out any direct negotiations with the United States over Tehran’s nuclear program, in light of Trump’s maximum pressure policy.

During his first term in the White House between 2017 and 2021, Trump adopted a policy of maximum pressure towards Tehran, which included unilaterally withdrawing from the international agreement on its nuclear program and re-imposing harsh sanctions on it with the aim of weakening its economy and isolating it on the international stage.

In response to Trump’s withdrawal from the deal in 2018, Iran has gradually rolled back many of its core nuclear commitments.

Iran held talks on Monday on the nuclear file with Britain, France and Germany after resuming negotiations in November.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said on Tuesday that a new round of talks with the Europeans is expected within three weeks.
