The European Union’s foreign policy chief proposed a new easing of sanctions on Syria to allow funding for several areas, including reconstruction.

The new relief will provide funding to the Syrian Ministries of Defense and Interior for cooperation in the areas of reconstruction, capacity building, counterterrorism, and illegal migration.

A special clause would give EU countries greater room to maneuver in dealing with Syrian state-owned entities when it comes to destroying chemical weapons.

The new proposal calls for lifting sanctions on the Commercial Bank of Syria and continuing measures targeting individuals associated with the ousted Assad regime.

This came in a European document distributed by Germany, Italy, Austria, and the Netherlands, calling for the lifting of sanctions on the Central Bank of Syria.

The country distributing the document says the goal of easing sanctions is to allow for social and economic recovery.
