A big victory for the left and a sudden resounding defeat for the far right in the French parliamentary elections
The leftist New Popular Front coalition in France won the most seats in the second round of parliamentary elections, leading opinion pollsters said on Sunday, putting it on track for a victory without an absolute majority in parliament.
The coalition was ahead of the far-right National Rally party, an unexpected result.
An estimate by IFOB for TF1 television said the new Popular Front could win between 180 and 215 seats in parliament in the second round of voting.
A poll conducted by Ipsos for France TV predicted the left-wing bloc would win between 172 and 215 seats.
A poll conducted by Opinion Way for CNN said the new Popular Front would win between 180 and 210 seats.
An Elap poll for BFM TV predicted the Left Front would win between 175 and 205 seats.
According to opinion polls, President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist bloc is narrowly ahead of Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party in the battle for second place.
A total of 289 seats are required to achieve an absolute majority in the National Assembly, the lower house of the French parliament.
