Romania’s Foreign Ministry on Friday condemned what it called a dangerous and irresponsible escalation by Russia, after a Russian drone crashed into a building in a city in eastern Romania near the border with Ukraine, injuring two people slightly.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that this incident represents a dangerous and irresponsible escalation on the part of the Russian Federation.

“Romania has informed its allies and the Secretary General of NATO of the situation, and has requested measures to accelerate the transfer of counter-drone capabilities to Romania,” the statement added.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Friday that “Russian aggression has crossed a new line” after a drone hit a building in Romania, an EU member state bordering Ukraine.

“We stand in full solidarity with Romania and its people… As we continue to strengthen our security and deterrence capabilities, particularly on our eastern borders, we will continue to increase pressure on Russia,” she wrote on X.

From its part, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on Friday condemned what he called an “irresponsible act” by Russia, after a Russian drone crashed into a residential building in Romania, injuring two people, near the border with Ukraine.

Barrot, who summoned the Russian ambassador to France on Friday morning, explained in remarks to France Inter radio that he intends to inform him that the intense air strikes targeting civilians last weekend, the threats made against French and European diplomats in Moscow, and these new irresponsible acts, are all worthless acts of intimidation.

He stressed that these actions are ultimately futile and will in no way deter us from our support for the Ukrainian resistance.
