Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced Friday that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened to maritime traffic for the remainder of the ceasefire in the Middle East, following Israel’s agreement to a truce with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Araghchi wrote on X, “Under the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage of all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz will be fully available for the remainder of the ceasefire period,” noting that this will be done through the coordinated route as announced by the Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization.

Araghchi didn’t specify which deadline he was referring to a two-week ceasefire agreement between Iran and the United States went into effect on the night of April 7-8, while a ten-day ceasefire in Lebanon began on Thursday night and lasted until Friday morning.

Iranian state television reported on Friday, citing a military official, that Tehran would prevent military vessels from crossing the Strait of Hormuz, after the Islamic Republic announced it was reopening the vital waterway to commercial shipping.

A senior military official told state television that “the passage of military vessels through the Strait of Hormuz remains prohibited,” adding that civilian vessels must cross the waterway via designated routes and with permission from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy.
