After nearly 39 days of confrontations, US President Donald Trump announced his agreement to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, shortly before the deadline he had set for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

This announcement came as a surprise, especially after previous statements in which he warned of a widespread escalation that could lead to disastrous consequences if his demands were not met.

According to what was announced, the agreement stipulates guaranteeing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, through which a large part of the world’s oil supply passes.

In this context, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that Tehran would halt its counter-military operations and allow safe passage for ships.

From his part, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also indicated that his country had played a role in mediation, calling for the completion of negotiations through direct meetings between the two sides.

Trump explained that this understanding represents an important step towards a broader agreement, stressing that the United States has achieved its military objectives, and that the Iranian multi-point proposal could be the basis for a long-term settlement.

Global markets experienced a period of extreme anxiety during the escalation, especially with threats to close the Strait of Hormuz, which led to higher oil prices and increased fears of a global economic slowdown.

The crisis was also accompanied by military strikes targeting infrastructure inside Iran, including vital facilities such as bridges, airports and energy facilities, while the repercussions of the war extended to several countries, with thousands of victims recorded in recent weeks.

Despite the announcement of the truce, expectations still indicate that the next two weeks will be crucial in determining whether the parties will be able to reach a final agreement, or return to the cycle of escalation.
