Axios: The Trump administration is considering terms of deal to end the war with Iran
Axios reported, citing sources, that the administration of US President Donald Trump is initially discussing the next phase and shape of peace talks with Iran.
“A deal to end the war must include reopening the Strait of Hormuz, addressing Iran’s stockpiles of highly enriched uranium, and establishing a long-term agreement on its nuclear program, ballistic missiles, and support for its proxies in the region,” Axios said, citing a US official.
“Witkoff and Kushner are participating in discussions on a possible diplomatic path with Iran,” it added, noting that “Iranian demands include a ceasefire, guarantees that the war won’t resume in the future, and compensation”.
“We saw that we have curbed Iran’s ambitions and we believe that Tehran will come to the negotiating table,” Axios quoted a US official as saying, explaining that there may be room to negotiate the return of Iran’s frozen assets.
The US official added: “What Iran calls compensation we may call the return of frozen funds, and there are several ways to formulate it, and we want commitments from Iran that include no missile program for five years, no uranium enrichment, and we also require the dismantling of the Natanz, Isfahan and Fordow reactors, and strict external control of the expulsion devices”.
“Trump’s advisers want to be prepared if talks with Iran begin in the near future, and Witkoff and Kushner’s terms will be similar to those offered in Geneva two days before the war began,” Axios reported.
The developments come as the US-Israeli war against Iran continues into its 22nd day.
