PKK won’t take any further step in peace process with Ankara and demands Abdullah Öcalan’s release

A leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq’s Qandil Mountains said his party “won’t take any further step” in the peace process with Ankara, calling on it to release leader Abdullah Öcalan.

In statement on Saturday: “We’ve implemented all the steps initiated by the commander (Abdullah Öcalan) … After these steps, there will be no further step”.

“From now on, we are waiting for the Turkish state to take these steps”.

The PKK’s has two main demands, which are:

  • The freedom for Abdullah Öcalan, who has been imprisoned on İmralı Island since 1999.
  • Constitutional and official recognition of the Kurdish people in Türkiye.
