During his visit to the US… The Syrian Foreign Minister re-opens the Syrian embassy in Washington
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani raised his country’s flag at the Damascus embassy in Washington on Friday evening.
This came as part of a visit described by Damascus as historic by Shaibani to Washington, making him the first Syrian minister to visit the United States in a quarter century.
According to the Syrian official News Agency (SANA), “the ceremony of re-opening the Syrian Embassy in Washington, Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani raised the flag of the Syrian Arab Republic at its embassy in Washington”.
This development constitutes an implicit US recognition of the new Syrian government, paving the way for further bilateral cooperation in the future, according to observers.
On Thursday, Shaibani arrived in Washington for a historic visit, his first to this position in 25 years.
No Syrian foreign minister has made an official visit to Washington since 2000 due to the deterioration of relations between the two countries, making this move an exceptional event and reflecting a desire to open new channels of communication.
Although the purpose and purpose of the visit haven’t been announced, it indicates a shift in Washington’s stance toward Damascus and may mark the beginning of negotiations aimed at finding political solutions to the Syrian crisis.
