As part of a strategic plan to enhance domestic manufacturing capacity… Egypt announces the production of the Thunder Sound howitzer capable of striking distant targets
Egyptian Minister of State for Military Production Mohamed Salah Elddin Mustafa announced that Egypt is currently completing the production line for the K9 A1 EGY howitzer, known as “Thunder Sound”.
According to him, the system is being manufactured at Military Factory 200 (an armored vehicles production and repair plant), one of Egypt’s most modern military industrial facilities.
This project is considered part of a strategic plan to enhance the armed forces’ domestic manufacturing capacity.
Mustafa explained that “Thunder Sound” is an upgraded version of the South Korean K9 Thunder self-propelled artillery system, developed by Samsung Techwin.
It’s considered one of the most advanced artillery systems in the world and is currently used in several NATO countries.
Thunder Sound has remarkable specifications, with high firepower and long range: The range of the 155 mm shells ranges between 40 and 56 kilometers, depending on the type of ammunition.
Speed in combat: The system can position itself and prepare for launch in just 60 seconds (30 seconds per phase).
Heavy fire: capable of firing 6 to 8 shells in one minute.
Protection: It has 19 mm thick armor, which protects it from light fire and shrapnel, in addition to its ability to withstand chemical and biological attacks.
Crew: Consists of 5 members.
The K9 system works in cooperation with two support vehicles:
K10: Rearmament vehicle, carries 104 shells, and automatically reloads the gun within minutes.
K77: Mobile fire control center, used for high-precision target identification and bombing coordination.
In addition to the “Thunder Sound” project, the Egyptian minister revealed the development of an upgraded version of the Sinai 200 armored vehicle, as well as a major achievement: the production of armored steel for the first time in Egypt and the Middle East, in cooperation with one of Egypt’s largest private sector companies.
He stressed that this achievement represents a strategic element in building defense capabilities, as armored steel forms the basis for the manufacture of tanks and armored combat vehicles.
He pointed out that the goal of these projects is to localize modern military manufacturing technology and achieve self-sufficiency to serve the needs of the armed forces.
He said that possessing such capabilities consolidates Egypt’s military superiority, not only to preserve national security, but also to send a deterrent message to anyone considering undermining the country’s security, and a reassuring message to the Egyptian people that the state is capable of protecting its borders and safeguarding its sovereignty.
