Reports reveal the date of Syria and Israel signing a US-sponsored security agreement while the Syrian government denies
Senior Syrian sources revealed that Syria and Israel are preparing to sign a US-sponsored security agreement on September 25, as part of international efforts to defuse tensions in the region.
According to sources, the signing of the agreement is scheduled to be preceded by an official speech by Syrian transitional President Ahmed al Sharaa in New York on September 24, during his participation in the UN General Assembly meetings.
The sources confirmed that the proposed agreement won’t include a comprehensive peace treaty between the two parties at this stage, but will be limited to security arrangements aimed at de-escalating and de-escalating tensions between Syria and Israel, particularly in the southern regions.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani held a meeting in the French capital, Paris, with Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer, during which they discussed security arrangements for southern Syria.
These meetings are part of a series of US-brokered talks aimed at reaching understandings on de-escalation in the border areas.
A previous round of these talks took place in Paris in late July, but they ended without a final agreement, prompting the parties to continue the dialogue in a more focused diplomatic framework.
In another meeting last Tuesday, Syrian Foreign Minister met with an Israeli delegation in Paris, where the two sides discussed issues related to enhancing stability in southern Syria, monitoring the ceasefire in Sweida Governorate, and reactivating the 1974 disengagement agreement.
The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that the talks focused on de-escalation, non-interference in Syria’s internal affairs, and supporting understandings that enhance regional stability.
It also noted that these discussions are being held under US auspices, within a diplomatic framework aimed at preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and enhancing security in the country.
However, the Syrian Foreign Ministry denied on Saturday reports of an imminent security agreement between Syria and Israel on September 25.
The Coordination and Communications Office of the Ministry’s Media Department confirmed, that what was published in this regard is “baseless”.
