Syria and Türkiye sign a defense cooperation agreement
The defense ministries of Syria and Türkiye signed a joint cooperation agreement aimed at supporting the Syrian army’s capabilities, developing its military institutions, and restructuring the security sector in line with international standards.
According to the official Syrian News Agency (SANA), the signing ceremony took place following a meeting between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani, Defense Minister Muharraf Abu Qasra, and Intelligence Chief Hussein Salameh with Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler in the capital, Ankara.
The most important provisions of the agreement:
Exchange of military personnel: Organizing specialized training programs aimed at raising operational efficiency and enhancing joint work capabilities between the two sides.
Specialized training: Includes counterterrorism, mine clearance, cybersecurity, military engineering, logistics support, and peacekeeping operations, with an emphasis on adherence to international best practices.
Technical support: Sending military experts to contribute to modernizing defense systems, developing the organizational structure of the Syrian Armed Forces, and enhancing command capabilities.
This step comes as part of Syria’s efforts to modernize the army and provide professional training to its personnel, with the aim of curbing the excesses of irregular factions and ensuring the armed forces’ adherence to international military laws and standards.
Earlier Wednesday, an official Syrian delegation arrived in Ankara, where they held talks with Turkish officials on political cooperation and security and military coordination, particularly regarding border control and the fight against terrorist organizations.
During a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, the Syrian Foreign Minister affirmed that both sides emphasized the importance of continued coordination between the two countries to maintain regional stability and strengthen partnerships in various fields.
