German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, speaking on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Canada on Tuesday, expressed Berlin’s strong support for the extensive strikes launched by Israel against Iran since Friday.

“This is a dirty job that Israel is doing on behalf of all of us… We’re also victims of this regime in Iran… This regime… has brought death and destruction to the world,” Merz said in an interview with German ZDF broadcaster.

In another interview with Welt TV, Merz believed that attacks on Iran could destroy the leadership of Iran.

“I believe that the attacks of recent days have greatly weakened the regime, and it’s unlikely to return to its former strength, making the country’s future uncertain,” he said.

“Frankly, I cannot imagine the regime returning to its previous duties,” he added.

He pointed out that many members of the military leadership and the so-called Revolutionary Guard are no longer alive, and therefore things won’t return to the way they were.

In response to a question about the possibility of the United States participating in an attack on Iran, the German Chancellor expressed his belief that there is no decision yet by the US government on the matter.

“It now largely depends on the regime’s (in Iran’s) willingness to return to the negotiating table… Otherwise, further developments of this kind may occur,” he said.

Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran on Friday, stating that its attacks aim to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Tehran denies seeking to develop a nuclear weapon.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that Israel is “changing the face of the Middle East” through its strikes, which could lead to radical changes in Iran.
