Russian attack kills and injures dozens in Kyiv
At least 14 people were killed and more than 40 others injured in a massive Russian airstrike on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, overnight, local authorities said, in one of the deadliest strikes on the city in months.
According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Interior, the attack lasted approximately nine hours and included the use of kamikaze drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.
Loud explosions and drone sounds were heard in the skies over Kyiv throughout the night.
The attack sparked fires in more than 27 different locations, including residential buildings, educational facilities, and vital infrastructure, including a kindergarten in the southeast of the city.
Authorities also reported power outages and widespread fires, while rescue teams continued searching for survivors under the rubble.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that an American citizen was among the dead, without providing further details about his identity.
Large areas of the capital were also damaged, as Ukrainian air defenses intensified their efforts to repel the attack.
The bombing coincided with the G7 summit in Canada, attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a possible sign of a symbolic escalation by Moscow.
Drone attacks were also reported on the southern port city of Odessa, according to the city’s mayor.
