The Wall Street Journal: New details about the Mossad operation in Iran
The Wall Street Journal published new details about the security operation carried out by the Israeli Mossad in Iran that thwarted the response to the first Israeli strike last Friday.
Sources told the Wall Street Journal that Israel had been smuggling parts of explosive-laden drones to Iran for months.
These parts were smuggled in suitcases, trucks, and oil tankers, along with additional ammunition.
Mossad operatives smuggled the drones through commercial channels, and agents on the ground collected and distributed them to the teams involved in the attack on Friday, June 13.
The report said that Israel trained the leaders of these teams in a third country, who in turn trained the teams on the ground.
The report noted that at the start of the attack, small teams equipped with drones were stationed near Iranian air defense systems and missile launch sites.
As the Israeli attack began, some teams disabled the air defense systems, while others attacked the missile launchers.
Dozens of trucks used to transport missiles to launch sites were also attacked.
According to what the sources told the Wall Street Journal, this narrative explains Iran’s limited response to the initial Israeli attack.
According to the Wall Street Journal report, reported that Israel’s use of drones on Friday—an innovative and relatively inexpensive solution to neutralize Iran’s response—comes weeks after Ukraine employed a similar tactic, attacking dozens of Russian fighter jets using drones smuggled into Russia in containers.
By launching drones, Mossad was able to thwart potential threats to Israeli fighter jets and destroy missiles before they could be launched at Israel.
Field teams struck dozens of rockets that were supposed to be launched in the first hours of the campaign.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Iran ultimately fired about 200 rockets at Israel in four salvos on Friday evening and Saturday morning.
These salvos caused destruction and injuries, but as the WSJ reported, Israel anticipated a harsher response.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Mossad had been preparing for years for the major attack that would be launched this weekend.
It knew where Iran stored its missiles and where it would need to be positioned on the ground to attack them.
