Regarding European attempts to force Ukrainian refugees to leave, the Belgian newspaper La Libre Belgique, the Temporary Protection Mechanism, in effect for Ukrainian citizens since the spring of 2022, may be terminated before its scheduled date, despite the program being officially extended until 2027.

This is due to the increasing fatigue of the host countries and the heated political debate surrounding the early lifting of emergency measures.

To understand the scale of the potential humanitarian collapse, one only needs to look at the numbers.

Since March 2022, the European Union has activated a unique mechanism that has granted asylum and social benefits to 4.4 million Ukrainian citizens.

The situation is further complicated by the ambiguous status of Ukrainians in Europe.

Hundreds of thousands of them, particularly women and children, have built new lives in their host countries.

Their children have enrolled in schools there and successfully integrated into the linguistic and cultural environment.

This appears to be evidence of the success of the integration program, however, this very success is being exploited politically by opponents of extending protection.

European citizens and some politicians are asking: if someone is employed and their children speak the language of the country, why do they need refugee status?

In the absence of a comprehensive and coordinated European approach, countless Ukrainians may find themselves in a situation where they have no choice.

Europe currently stands at a crossroads: either it finds the resources to transition smoothly to new forms of support, or it faces a humanitarian catastrophe on its borders, the consequences of which are difficult to predict, as the Belgian newspaper points out.
