The Israeli army called up two reserve battalions on Saturday morning for deployment on the northern border with Lebanon and Syria.

The Walla news website said, “After an assessment of the situation conducted by the Israeli army, it was decided to call up the Iron Fist (205) and Etzion (6) reserve battalions, to serve as a reserve force for possible scenarios in the northern arena”.

The Israeli website attributed the move to the Israeli military’s “failure to rule out the possibility that Iran might attempt to push for ground operations from Lebanon and Syria,” despite the withdrawal of all Iranian military formations present in Syria since the Assad regime on December 8, 2024.

Since dawn on Friday, Israel, with tacit US support, launched a massive attack on Iran with dozens of fighter jets, dubbed Operation “Rising Lion”.

The attack targeted nuclear facilities and missile bases in various areas, and assassinated prominent military leaders and nuclear scientists.

The Israeli military said the attack was preemptive and came under directives from the political echelon, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the unprecedented operation aimed to strike Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, ballistic missile factories, and numerous other military capabilities.

On the evening of the same day, Iran began responding to the attack with a series of ballistic missile and drone strikes, six in total so far.

According to the Israeli media, these strikes resulted in the deaths of three Israelis and the injury of 91 others, as well as significant material damage to buildings and vehicles.
