In a remarkable development, a senior Hezbollah official revealed to Reuters on Tuesday that the Lebanese group is prepared to enter into talks about the future of its weapons, provided that the Israeli army withdraws from southern Lebanon and ends the ongoing airstrikes on the country.

The official said that Hezbollah is willing to discuss the future of its weapons with President Joseph Aoun if Israel withdraws from southern Lebanon and stops bombing the country.

According to Reuters, the official set conditions for entering into talks that observers hope will lead to the group laying down its weapons.

The issue of Hezbollah’s weapons has been resurfaced as Israeli airstrikes continue to pressure the party despite a ceasefire that has been in place since November.

These statements also come amid mounting international pressure, particularly from the United States, which is pushing for the disarmament of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah.

US envoy Morgan Ortagus said in an interview that disarming Hezbollah is part of President Donald Trump’s maximum pressure policy on Iran.

She added, “Resolution 1701 stipulates the disarmament of Hezbollah throughout Lebanese territory…and the Lebanese army, with its current capabilities, is capable of disarming Hezbollah”.

She also stated earlier that Hezbollah and other armed groups in Lebanon should be disarmed as quickly as possible, and expected the army to undertake this task.

Ortagus’s remarks came at the conclusion of a three-day visit to Beirut, during which she met with President Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, and other officials and political representatives.
