In first decision after winning German elections, Friedrich Merz challenges international arrest warrant against Netanyahu and intends to invite him to visit Berlin.

Merz, who won in German elections, intends to invite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit Berlin, after assuming his position as Chancellor of Germany, succeeding Olaf Scholz, in defiance of an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Netanyahu.

“Last night, Netanyahu had a friendly conversation with Friedrich Merz, who after winning the German elections became Chancellor-designate, and congratulated him on his victory,” the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement on Monday.

Merz, the leader of the Christian Democratic Alliance, which came in first in the general elections, according to the official preliminary results of the legislative elections held Sunday in Germany.

“Designated Chancellor Merz thanked the prime minister for the conversation and said he would invite him to make an official visit to Germany, in open defiance of the International Criminal Court’s outrageous decision to designate the prime minister a war criminal,” the statement added.

On November 21, the International Criminal Court issued two arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant for committing war crimes and crimes against humanity against Palestinians in Gaza.
