Ahmed al Sharaa: Kurdish forces refuse to restrict weapons to the authorities
The leader of the new Syrian administration, Ahmed al Sharaa, said that the Kurdish forces were the only group that didn’t respond to the new administration’s call to hand over weapons to the authorities.
He added that the presence of foreign fighters in Syria couldn’t be accepted under any circumstances.
Speaking to the Turkish news channel, al Sharaa explained that the Kurdistan Workers’ Party and the Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) haven’t yet agreed to hand over their weapons and join the forces affiliated with the new Syrian Ministry of Defense.
He stressed that the new administration won’t allow the Kurdistan Workers’ Party to carry out any terrorist attacks against Türkiye, affirming its full commitment to ensuring the security of the Turkish borders.
He also pointed out that the People’s Protection Units (the main force inside the ranks of SDF) didn’t respond to requests to hand over weapons, and accused the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) of exploiting the ISIS file to achieve its own interests.
Late last month, the leader of the new Syrian administration met with a delegation from the SDF, and the talks were described as positive, according to an official familiar with the meeting.
In the same context, the UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, called during a press conference in Damascus to give a chance to negotiations between the interim authorities and the SDF, noting that both Türkiye and the United States have a major role in supporting these talks.
Pedersen warned that the escalation of military operations would lead to negative repercussions on Syria, calling for avoiding military confrontation and working to achieve a peaceful and diplomatic solution that includes the northeast of the country.
