US Secretary of State: A serious progress in draft agreement with Iran to end the war
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced progress in the draft of the potential agreement with Iran, indicating that new developments regarding this issue could be announced on Sunday.
This came during a joint press conference held by Rubio following his meeting with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in New Delhi.
Rubio explained that the coming hours may witness the announcement of new developments related to Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that US President Donald Trump will announce the details related to this issue.
He stressed that despite serious progress in reaching an agreement with Iran, a final result hasn’t yet been reached, saying: “I would like to remind you that the ultimate goal is for Iran not to possess a nuclear weapon”.
Rubio added that the United States, in cooperation with its partners in the Gulf region, had made progress in the past 48 hours on a draft aimed at keeping the Strait of Hormuz fully open and not imposing any transit fees.
For his part, Jaishankar affirmed that the United States and India are bound by a strategic partnership, explaining that his discussions with Rubio covered recent developments in the Middle East, in addition to bilateral relations in the fields of defense and the economy.
He added that India enjoys good relations with the United States, the Gulf States, Iran and Israel, and therefore follows developments in the region with interest.
He affirmed his country’s desire to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East, while continuing to maintain its relations with various parties, expressing his hope for a decline in energy prices.
Earlier on Sunday, it was reported that the United States and Iran were close to reaching an agreement that would include reopening the Strait of Hormuz, allowing Tehran to sell oil, and resuming negotiations aimed at restricting Iran’s nuclear program.
On Saturday evening, US President Donald Trump announced that negotiations on most of the terms of an agreement with Iran had been completed, with details about to be revealed.
Pakistan is leading mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran to end the war that broke out on February 28 following attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran, before a temporary ceasefire was reached on April 8.
