According to a US official cited by Axios, the United States and Iran are nearing a temporary understanding to extend the ceasefire for 60 days, a move aimed at reducing tensions and paving the way for broader negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program.

The official stated that the expected agreement includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic without tolls, along with Iran’s commitment to remove mines and ensure safe passage for ships during the truce.

The agreement also includes easing some sanctions on Iranian ports and granting waivers that would allow Tehran to resume oil exports, which could have a positive impact on the Iranian economy and global energy markets.

Sources indicate that the agreement is based on a commitment-for-commitment principle, whereby the gradual lifting of sanctions is contingent on Iran’s adherence to the required measures, particularly those related to maritime security in the Gulf.

Regarding the nuclear issue, the draft understanding stipulates an Iranian commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, while also entering into negotiations to halt uranium enrichment and address its highly enriched stockpile.

Sources also spoke of unannounced Iranian pledges made through intermediaries, including Tehran’s willingness to take flexible steps in exchange for negotiations on lifting sanctions and releasing frozen Iranian funds as part of a potential final agreement.

US forces will remain temporarily in the region during this interim period, with the issue of withdrawal or reducing the military presence to be addressed in any subsequent comprehensive settlement.

According to Axios, the White House hopes to resolve the remaining points of contention in the coming hours in preparation for the official announcement of the agreement, amid warnings that the understanding could collapse if Tehran doesn’t demonstrate seriousness in addressing the nuclear issue.
